What are Utah state stores like? I would have to imagine even worse than the PA state stores because Utah is a poor state.

Never been, but the pictures look nice. Utah's not that poor. New Hampshire state stores are nice. Pennsylvania can't have nice things.

You need to check out the locations of stores in Utah since they are very scattered. Not to excuse store locations in PA but Utah is really bad outside of the cities. That said, the population is also sparse.

Actually, I don't really care about Utah or its stores. I live here in PA. That's what I'm concerned about.

The question is not if PA is better than Utah but why is it mediocre at best compared to the other 48 states.

Having been, I'd say that Utah stores are nicer overall than PA ones and their new stores are better than the FWAGS stores.

Even after all of the FWGS ballyhoo over the last five years (and several rounds of "upgrades" to the state store system in the decade or two before that), why do some state stores still look just like they did in 1976? There still are many state stores that never left the 70's or 80's. This applies to their cleanliness and basic maintenance too.

The PLCB has previously said that they aren't going to upgrade all the stores to FWAGS so I don't think that will change a number of the older stores. I wonder if the signage will consolidate down to just 2 styles instead of the 4 or 5 there are now?

Albert, shame on you! To assume the PLCB gave sufficient thought to creating only 2 styles of stores is giving them too much credit. They created the FWGS theme which only adds to the many other outdated themes. They don't have the money to revamp all the stores or the discipline to change all the other stores to create a consistent statewide theme that tells you what is inside the stores. In another 5 to 7 years (if they survive) the new board will create another look that will be implemented. They never get rid of the old they just keep adding to the garbage pile.

I only mentioned the sign styles not the stores themselves. I have no hope that the stores would ever get down to just 2 styles..

Corbett failed to privatize (despite all the talk about it), as have so many Republicans before him (and yes there have been anti-PLCB Democrats), so is there really any hope privatization will ever happen? I'm not too educated on how the whole privatization thing would actually happen, but I must say it seems more likely that the apocalypse will happen before privatization can...

Why so glum? There has been more real movement toward privatization in the past 5 years than in the previous 30; a bill passed the House for the first time, two years later a privatization bill passed the House and the Senate, though it was vetoed by the Governor. Now deep into negotiations, the House easily passed a bill again, and changes are still in play. I'll repeat: why so glum? If it doesn't pass, you can bet it will be back next year.

Every PA citizen should be taught in school the meaning of the following acronyms:

1. PLCB
2. BLCE
3. UFCW
4. ISSU
5. TURF
6. RAMP
7. BYOB
8. WSWA

The above are all related to the PLCB.

Albert Brooks said...

I have to say you've got me on TURF as it pertains to the PLCB. The only acronym I know for that is used in statistical analysis.

Clue me in please.

Deal... I will clue you in on TURF but you must clue me in on what COSTA is (in the other thread). TURF is Tailgaters Urging Responsibility and Fun.

Albert Brooks said...

Somehow I fell a little shortchanged with that acronym. Is that something real?

We know Mormons (I'm not criticizing them just stating a fact) are the reason for Utah having ABC stores, but is there a similar religious motivation for creating the system in Pennsylvania? Quakers founded Pennsylvania, you know!

Lew Bryson said...

People blame it on the Quakers, but it was really down to Governor Gifford Pinchot. He was an unreformed Dry, and if Repeal was to be forced on him, he wanted to maintain some kind of grip on the drinkers' throats. The PLCB was his brainchild. He was a brilliant, energetic man, and one of Pennsylvania's best governors...but he was a bit screwy where alcohol was concerned.
